Creative Commons Quercus Lobata/Valley Oak Leaf Scans
I’m doing a website project for my grandfather, Robert Edminster - once I finish it, I’ll be sure to mention it here. To make a long story short, the design involved an oak leaf motif. So, I went outside, picked a small branch from the Valley Oak outside, and scanned them three of the oak leaves that were in the best shape. I’m releasing the original source image as well as a couple of edited/cleaned-up versions of the original image.
I believe these are leaves from a Valley Oak, Quercus lobata, but I could be wrong.
You can download all of the derivations I made of the original scanned image, including the original image and a transparent PNG GIMP .xcf file, here, in a .zip file: oak leaves zip. As well, here are the individual files:

And a single oak leaf, GIMP .xcf source.
Feel free to use these for any project, commercial or non-commercial, under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. All I ask is that you send me an e-mail letting me know if you do so.

We’re in California!
So we’re in California now! Here are a couple photos I took on the way and while I was packing.
In more or less chronological order:
Here’s my old, old bike. Once I got a new one, I left the old one outside the back porch, leaning against the house. Nature soon hopped on top of it, perhaps wanting to go for a ride…
Here’s our cat in our empty living room. She looks a little sad.

I took this in Iowa. It’s the sign for the world’s largest truck stop, Iowa 80. It is indeed quite large. It has a barbershop, even.
Finally, here’s a shot I took out the back window of snow on the Sierra Nevadas, on I-80 before Truckee. It’s good to see the Sierras again.

Lupe Fiasco came to Calvin College tonight. Awesome show - here’s a video of “Hello/Goodbye” - to download - I haven’t converted it to Flash video yet.

Cool Old Photo - Eiffel Tower in the 1990s
I took this photo on July 4, 1997. It’s the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France - the big sign on it says that there are 911 more days until January 1, 2000.
I think the sign itself is pretty ugly, actually, but it’s cool to be able to look at a picture of an iconic monument like this and know exactly when the photo was taken.

Our Street Sure is Empty When the College Students Are Gone
It’s amazing how much room there is to park on the street in front of our house when the Grand Rapids Community College kids are on spring break.

I think there were only 3 cars parked on the street on the whole block, one of which was ours.
